What is an Interactive Science Notebook (ISN)?
An Interactive Notebook is a tool that will help you succeed in this class. You will use your notebook to 1) review for quizzes and tests, 2) keep track of assignments and class progress on a daily basis, 3) personalize your learning experience in science by having a means to reflect thoughtfully, creatively, and individually. This style of notebook uses both the right and left-brain hemispheres to help sort, categorize and be creative with the new science information you are learning.
What are my responsibilities?
You are responsible for keeping up with all notebook entries. If you are absent, you must copy the notes from your lab partner or from the class notebook. Any worksheets that you miss will be in the "While you were out" bin in the classroom. You will need to keep your table of contents up to date. All of your notebook entries must have page numbers and dates.
What is the difference between a “left side” and a “right side” activity?
Left side (input) activities are done together as a class. Some examples of left side entries include class notes, handouts or worksheets completed as a class, and any handouts that include testable information.
Right side (output) activities are done on your own. It is your opportunity to “show me you know” in a variety of ways.
How will the notebook be graded?
I may spot check your notebook at any time without notice. Throughout the nine week period, I will select several entries or pieces of entries at random to grade. It will be the same entries for everyone but you will not know in advance which ones will be evaluated.
Sometimes you will have the opportunity to use your notebook on a quiz or test. Keeping an organized notebook will help you succeed on tests and other graded assignments so it will also improve your academic grade.
